常见问题

Q:What time should I reach Jingshan for sunset?

A:Arrive about an hour before sunset to hold a place at the Wanchun Pavilion railing. Sunset falls around 19:00 to 19:30 in summer and 16:30 to 17:00 in winter. Entry is 2 CNY, with summer hours of 6:00 to 21:00 and winter hours of 6:30 to 20:00.

Q:How much does the Liangma River night cruise cost?

A:Tickets are around 100 to 150 CNY per person for a cruise of about forty minutes from the Yansha dock to the Solana stretch. Departures generally run between 18:30 and 21:30 depending on season, and the 19:00 to 21:00 window gives the strongest lighting.

Q:When do Beijing metro trains stop running at night?

A:Last trains usually fall between 22:30 and 23:30, with trunk lines such as Line 1, Line 2 and Line 10 running later than outer branches. Check the real-time last train for your own station in the metro app, since ride-hailing waits grow after 22:00.

Q:Is the Olympic Park free at night?

A:Yes, the park itself is free and open, and the Bird's Nest, Water Cube and Olympic Tower are lit for viewing between roughly 19:30 and 21:30. Interior visits to the stadium and aquatics centre need separate tickets and close earlier, so evenings are mainly for the exteriors.

How Beijing's Night Scenery Fits Together

Beijing after dark splits into two moods that sit within half an hour of each other. On one side are the imperial silhouettes: the axis running from Jingshan through the Forbidden City to the Drum and Bell Towers, lit in warm white and visible from a single hilltop. On the other side is the modern city, where glass towers along the eastern third ring road switch on floor by floor.

The evening works when you choose a mood rather than trying to see everything. A sunset from Jingshan followed by Houhai is one evening. A Liangma River cruise finishing at Guomao is another. Attempting both in one night means spending the good light in a taxi.

Sunset time drives the whole plan and moves by more than three hours across the year. In June the light goes at about 19:30, in late December at about 16:50. Arrive an hour before that if you want a spot at a railing, and check the day's sunset time rather than relying on the hour you remember from a previous trip.

One practical warning runs through this guide. Some sites close or stop admitting visitors well before the streets go quiet, metro last trains are earlier than in many capital cities, and the taxis that appear at 23:00 charge a night rate. Check closing times and last trains before you set out, not while standing at a locked gate.

Jingshan Park and Wanchun Pavilion

Jingshan is the hill directly north of the Forbidden City, built from the earth excavated for the palace moat, and its Wanchun Pavilion sits on the central axis at the highest natural point in the old city. From the railing you look straight down onto the golden roofs of the palace, with the whole grid of the city spreading beyond.

Entry costs 2 CNY, which makes it the least expensive viewpoint in Beijing. Summer hours are 6:00 to 21:00 and winter hours are 6:30 to 20:00, so the last hour of light falls inside opening time. The walk up from the south gate takes ten to fifteen minutes on stone steps, and the pavilion itself holds perhaps forty people comfortably.

Timing is everything. In summer, sunset falls around 19:00 to 19:30; in winter, around 16:30 to 17:00. Arrive an hour ahead and you can watch the light change from hard gold to soft pink to blue, which is the sequence photographers come for. Arrive ten minutes before and you will be standing behind a wall of phones.

The axis view extends north to the Drum and Bell Towers and south towards Yongdingmen, and on a clear evening the layered rooflines read as a single composition. Look west for the white dagoba in Beihai Park and east for the towers of Wangfujing. After the sun drops, the palace corner towers and the surrounding streets light up in stages rather than all at once.

Access is from Nanluoguxiang station on Line 6, about fifteen minutes on foot, or by taxi to the east gate on Jingshan East Street. Because the pavilion is small and the railings limited, weekends and holidays are crowded; a weekday evening gives you room to stand still and watch, which is the whole point of going.

Bring a layer. The hill is exposed on all sides and the wind picks up after sunset even in September, and the steps down are unlit in places. There are toilets near the gates but nothing open inside after dusk, so plan the stop before you climb.

Clear air matters more here than at street level. The hills to the west block the worst of the dust, but a hazy day still turns the palace roofs into a flat orange band with no depth. If the afternoon sky is milky, move Jingshan to another evening and take the river or the towers instead, where the lighting is closer and haze costs less.

Liangma River Waterfront

The Liangma River runs about 5.5 kilometres through the embassy district in the north-east of the city, and the rebuilt waterfront has become one of the most pleasant evening walks in Beijing. The lighting design is deliberately modern: low bollards, bridges picked out in changing colours, and reflections that stretch across the water when it is calm.

The night cruise is the centrepiece. Boats run from the Yansha dock to the Solana stretch in about forty minutes, with tickets around 100 to 150 CNY per person. Departures are generally between 18:30 and 21:30, adjusted by season, and the 19:00 to 21:00 window gives the strongest lighting on both banks.

Reach the river from Dongfeng Beiqiao or Zaoying station on Line 14, both a short walk from the water. The banks are flat and paved, which makes this the easiest of the night routes for older travellers or anyone pushing a stroller, and the whole walk can be done without stairs.

Dining is part of the appeal. Restaurants, izakaya and craft beer bars line the river, with terraces that face the water in summer. Solana, the shopping and dining complex at the eastern end, runs light shows and fountain displays on a regular schedule, so the cruise can end with a walk through the complex rather than a taxi home.

Book the boat ahead in summer and on weekends, since the evening departures fill up. If the cruise is sold out, the walk costs nothing and covers the same water; the clearest views are from the bridges rather than from the boat itself, and you can stop whenot a reflection catches the light.

Guomao CBD After Dark

Guomao is where Beijing shows its contemporary skyline. The CITIC Tower, known locally as China Zun, rises 528 metres and is the tallest building in the city, with a lit crown that is visible from much of the eastern districts. Around it, the Jianwai SOHO blocks and the Yintai Centre towers each have their own lighting scheme.

The area is reached directly by Guomao station on Line 1 and Line 10, which makes it the simplest night stop to combine with a dinner. Between 20:00 and 22:00 the office floors are fully lit and the towers read as a wall of light rather than a scatter of windows, which is the hour worth planning around.

Good vantage points are free and scattered: the upper terrace of the Guomao shopping complex, the open plaza at Jianwai SOHO, and the CBD city forest park, which gives you a foreground of trees against the towers. None of them require a ticket, and all of them are a short walk from the station exits.

For dinner, the malls hold restaurants across a wide price range and several bars with views. It is a business district rather than a tourist one, so the streets empty after 21:00 and the pavements are quiet, which makes photography easier than in the old city but also means fewer places to sit outside.

Pair Guomao with the Liangma River rather than with Jingshan. The two sit about fifteen minutes apart by taxi and share the same modern mood, and a river walk followed by a late dinner near the towers makes a coherent evening without crossing the city twice.

Winter is the better season for this district if you want clean frames, because the air after a cold front is usually clearer than in summer and the towers stand out sharply. The trade-off is wind between the buildings and fewer open terraces, so keep the indoor option, a bar or a restaurant on an upper floor, as a fallback.

Shichahai, Houhai and the Olympic Park

Shichahai is the lake district north-west of the Forbidden City, and Houhai, its northern lake, is the centre of Beijing's bar culture. Live music spills onto the water from small venues, the reflections of lanterns break up on the surface, and the Yinding Bridge provides the classic frame looking along the lake towards the Western Hills.

Arrive between 19:30 and 22:00. Bars vary widely: some are quiet courtyards with a single guitarist, others are loud rooms with a minimum spend. Expect 100 to 300 CNY per person for drinks, ask about the minimum charge before sitting down, and note that weekends bring queues at the door of the better-known venues.

The recommended walk starts at Yinding Bridge and follows the northern shore of Houhai eastwards, past the boat docks and the small side alleys. The hutong behind the bar strip is quieter and still residential, with courtyards lit by a single bulb above the gate and the occasional game of cards under a street lamp.

Metro access is from Beihai North on Line 6 or Shichahai on Line 8, both a short walk from the water. The lanes around the lake are narrow and poorly lit in places, so keep to the main shore path after 22:00 and use a taxi rather than cutting through alleys you do not know.

Further north, the Olympic Park offers a completely different scale. The Bird's Nest stadium shows its steel lattice in changing colours, the Water Cube glows blue through its membrane skin, and the Olympic Tower runs patterns along its height. The park itself is free and open, with wide plazas that suit a slow walk.

The strongest window is 19:30 to 21:30, reached from Olympic Park station on Line 8. Note that the stadium and the aquatics centre charge separately for interior visits and close earlier; in the evening you are seeing the exteriors, which is what most people come for. The park connects easily with the science museum for a full day in the north of the city.

Night Transport and Route Ideas

Metro is the reliable choice for the first half of the evening. Last trains generally fall between 22:30 and 23:30, with the main lines such as Line 1, Line 2 and Line 10 running later than the outer branches. Check the real-time last train for your specific station in the metro app before you commit to a late stop.

After 22:00, ride-hailing waits lengthen and prices rise, and taxis apply a night surcharge between 23:00 and 05:00. Outside the big venues there are usually cars waiting, but at Jingshan and along the Liangma River you may wait ten or fifteen minutes, so build that into the plan rather than discovering it at midnight.

  • Classic route: Jingshan sunset, walk down to Shichahai, finish with live music on Houhai.
  • Modern route: Liangma River cruise at 19:00, dinner at Solana, then the Guomao towers at 21:00.
  • Olympic route: Olympic Park at dusk, Bird's Nest and Water Cube, then a walk south through the forest park.

For families, the Liangma River walk is the easiest night out: flat, lit, full of places to eat, and short enough to finish before 21:00. For photographers, Jingshan plus Houhai gives the widest range of light, from a wide city panorama to close reflections on water, in a single evening.

If you would rather not manage the transfers yourself, a local operator can sequence the stops around sunset time and keep a car waiting at each exit. Beijing Wanyou Tianxia International Travel Agency arranges evening routes that pair a viewpoint with dinner and a fixed drop-off, which is useful when the group mixes fast walkers with people who need to sit down.

Getting Back After the Lights

The last stretch of a night-view evening needs as much planning as the viewpoint itself. Metro services wind down before midnight, so build the route so that the final stop sits close to a station on a line that runs late, and leave the furthest viewpoint for early in the evening rather than the end.

Ride-hailing demand spikes in the half hour after major landmarks dim their lights, and prices along with waiting times rise accordingly. Walking two or three blocks away from the crowd before requesting a car usually shortens the wait, and the same applies outside popular bar streets where vehicles queue in narrow lanes.

Weather matters more at night than during the day. Wind on open terraces and lakeside paths makes temperatures feel several degrees lower than the forecast, so a light layer is worth carrying even in early autumn. Rain clears crowds quickly but also blurs the skyline, and wet stone steps on hillside parks warrant slower pacing.

Keep the evening flexible. If a park closes earlier than expected or a viewpoint is too crowded, the riverside promenades and illuminated streets nearby deliver a similar atmosphere without a ticket, and they leave you closer to transport when the evening ends.
